David Edward Garcia, a youth motivational comedian, stopped by Ortiz Middle School today. Students were treated to his performance, where he shared his story from being deemed an “at-risk student” to learning five languages and earning a master’s degree. He also challenged Ortiz students to a dance-off and spent the afternoon speaking to SFPS educators.

The new 180-day rule was announced today by the New Mexico Public Education Department. We are reviewing the rule to ensure that SFPS' flexible 2024-25 school year calendar, adopted by the SFPS Board of Education in February, aligns with the new requirements. The start date for the 2024-25 school calendar will not be affected by this change. We thank you for your understanding and support as we work diligently on any needed updates. You can expect more details from us in the next few weeks.

Students from 14 schools across the district in 3rd through 8th grade are competing against each other in the SFPS STEM Fair. See it in person from 4-6 PM today at Santa Fe Community College!
Last week, Ortiz Middle School held "Spa Day" for staff after students were dismissed for the day!
Ortiz's wellness team planned the event to include yoga, donut glaze facials, henna tattoos, mindful coloring, a dance workout and more!

Thank you to Chef Marc Quinones, executive chef at Hotel Chaco in Albuquerque and "Super Chef" with Cooking with Kids, for spending time with our students at Nina Otero Community School this morning!
Chef Marc taught students the proper way to hold and use a knife, helped cut mangos and showed students how to cook the Carrot Rice Pilaf!
Students cooked Indian Lentils, with a Carrot Rice Pilaf, Cucumber Raita and a Mango Fruit Salad!

Mandela International Magnet School celebrated Black History Month with a gathering where author Bettye Kearse gave her family's oral history, students read poems, spoke about their experiences with race, and presented the Mozambique flag to be displayed among the school's international flags.
Congratulations to Team Scooby from Capital High School for their robotic gunshot detection system, which was named by Rep. Teresa Ledger Fernandez as the winners of the 2023 Congressional App Challenge in New Mexico’s Third District!
