Today marks a special day at Atalaya Elementary as they warmly welcome the arrival of not one, but TWO Buddy Benches - a vibrant addition to their playgrounds, one dedicated to their PreK buddies and another for their amazing students in grades 1-6. The journey to this moment began with a heartwarming story of empathy and kindness, sparked by the observant eyes of a first grader at Atalaya, Alyssa Kesler. Alyssa, moved by the sight of a friend playing alone, want to help not just her friend but any student in need of a buddy. Her idea? A space where anyone feeling lonely or in need of a playmate could find a friend. And here we are, seeing Alyssa's vision come to life with our brand new Buddy Benches! These benches are more than just a place to sit; they're a beacon of friendship, a call to action for inclusion, and a reminder that no one should ever feel alone. Let's use these benches to spread kindness, encourage new friendships, and build a community where everyone feels welcome. A huge thank you to everyone who supported this initiative, proving once again that great things happen when we come together for a good cause. Remember, if you're looking for a friend to play with, head to the Buddy Bench - someone there is waiting to share a smile, a laugh, and maybe even a new adventure. Here's to making every day a little brighter, one buddy at a time! 💖

The new 180-day rule was announced today by the New Mexico Public Education Department. We are reviewing the rule to ensure that SFPS' flexible 2024-25 school year calendar, adopted by the SFPS Board of Education in February, aligns with the new requirements. The start date for the 2024-25 school calendar will not be affected by this change. We thank you for your understanding and support as we work diligently on any needed updates. You can expect more details from us in the next few weeks.
